Pandemic gives rise to the ‘Staycation’ — Carmel’s Hofsas House provides Options for Regional Guests

The very core of a vacation involves traveling from one’s home to a faraway destination — leaving the stress of life far behind.

Carmel-By-The-Sea, CA, December 09, 2020 — The very core of a vacation involves traveling from one’s home to a faraway destination — leaving the stress of life far behind.

However, sometimes external circumstances (such as a global pandemic) can alter vacation plans dramatically.

Enter the “staycation,” devised by savvy travelers following the economic recession of 2008. Some staycation aficionados choose to stay overnight in their own homes during a staycation. Others specifically check into a hotel to get away from home, but still stay within close driving distance.

The Hofsas House in Carmel has opened its doors for those seeking to embrace the idea of a staycation. Because faraway travel is largely restricted, what better way to use up those vacation days than in idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea?

Staycations can save money, support local economies, and are easier to plan. While the traditional vacation requires many hours on airplanes or standing in security lines, the staycation leaves travelers more time to actually relax.

The winner of the 2020 Golden Pine Cone for “best hotel,” and the Carmel Chamber Business of Excellence Awards winner, the Hofsas House is a family-owned, dog-friendly hotel in the heart of the village.

In business since 1947, Hofsas House offers 37 uniquely decorated, spacious rooms, including two-bedroom suites complete with kitchenette, fireplace, balcony, and high-speed internet. Overlooking the pine tree canopy of the village, the hotel also provides a swimming pool and sauna. Located three blocks north of Ocean Avenue, eight blocks from the picturesque Carmel Beach and one block from a child-friendly city park, Hofsas House is a short walk from every local attraction.

Carmel-based Lewis Builders’ Rebuild of 1960s House by Renowned Architect Takes His Design Esthetics Into 21st Century

Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs.

Carmel, CA, April 29, 2019 — Joseph Eichler was a renowned architect in the 1950s and ‘60s who was known for his clean, open, mid-century modern designs. But even an architect whose work was ahead of his time could use an update in the 21st century.

That was the design-and-rebuild challenge for designer-builder John Lewis of Lewis Builders in Carmel, California. He wanted to keep the design esthetics of Eichler, but update the look, feel and functioning of an Eichler-designed home from the 1960s perched on a hillside in Carmel with views of the ocean.

The challenges were many: the heating and ventilation system was poured into the concrete slab foundation and had pest intrusion. The floor plan was choppy — you had to walk through one bedroom to get to the other. The kitchen was crowded — you couldn’t see from the kitchen to the dining room nor to the ocean. Parts of the house were starved for natural light.

In addition, a crowded kitchen, a misplaced fireplace wall, and overgrown vegetation outside all hindered ocean views from this 1,600-square-foot house located a block and a half from the beach. An old patio arbor blocked natural light and felt crowded.

The challenge was to rebuild the house into a modern, well-equipped and well-lighted home yet still keep as much of Eichler’s design esthetic as possible.

“We pride ourselves on being able to accomplish any kind of architectural design, Victorian, Contemporary, Carmel Cottage, Craftsman, and so on,” said Lewis. “With this house, we wanted to pay homage to Eichler and do something he would do in 2020. He was pretty modern for his time, so we call this an ‘updated’ Eichler.”

Lewis and his team added a hallway, along with a slight bump out to the back that made three bedrooms out of two. Kitchen, living, dining, and foyer were all opened up with windows and skylights to bring the outdoors in.

Some of the solutions included:

•Original heating, and ventilation, system was removed and radiant floor heating installed.

•A hallway was added to make three bedrooms.

•Kitchen, dining and living room were opened up.

•Fireplace was moved, energy efficient windows installed, landscaping rejuvenated, all to maximize ocean views.

•Natural light was optimized in true Eichler style to bring the outdoors in with six skylights, four patio doors, two French doors, and glass transoms on both interior and exterior walls.

•An operable skylight above the shower, including a glass transom, to bring both light and fresh air into the interior master bath.

•Trimless interior windows and doors to enhance the clean, geometric lines, especially prominent in the glass hallway.

Some of the details of the rebuild:

•7.5-inch wide plank European oak hardwood floors

•Natural stacked stone walls flank kitchen walls, fireplace wall, and accented throughout

•Waterfall countertops and TV console in Calcutta quartz

•Caesarstone in raw concrete quartz countertops

•Appliances from Bosch, Bertazzoni, and Fisher & Paykel

•Custom cabinetry

•Radiant floor heating

•Curbless showers

•Six oversized skylights (one operable above the Master shower), four patio doors, two French doors

•Two outdoor living spaces totaling more than 800 square feet

“We wanted to use clean, simple lines and natural elements such as wood and to add a warmth and softness to the space,” said Lewis, who calls the design “organic contemporary.” “We honored Eichler’s design by keeping some of the main esthetics in place.

Lewis said he learned a lot about Eichler’s design sensibilities by working on the house.

“As a student of design, I’m immediately attracted to these types of homes,” he said. “I would do anything to learn from the masters like Eichler. So this was a close, intimate experience to work with this house and its design. It was enhanced with modern conveniences, while being true to Eichler’s Mid-Century Modern design elements. We believe Eichler would be pleased.”

The house is for sale and listed with Doug & Lisa Steiny of Sotheby’s International Realty (http://www.dougsteiny.com).

Aromatherapist Cheryl Beller and Pet Therapist Adrienne Herman Join Forces to Open Joint Office in Downtown Carmel

Even though they run two distinct and separate businesses, aromatherapist Cheryl Beller and pet therapist Adrienne Herman have collaborated often when treating animals with physical, emotional and behavioral issues.

Carmel, CA, February 20, 2019 – Even though they run two distinct and separate businesses, aromatherapist Cheryl Beller and pet therapist Adrienne Herman have collaborated often when treating animals with physical, emotional and behavioral issues.

And, nine years after they first met, they’ve taken their collaboration to the next level by sharing an office space in Carmel, which will not only allow them to work closer together, but also allow Beller to hold educational sessions on the proper uses and dilutions of quality essential oils, as well as blending classes, personal consultations, and a weekly Aroma Bar, where one can go home with one’s own custom-blended therapeutic blend or create one for a special friend or fur baby-- blends for people, horses, dogs and cats!

“We’re both practitioners and both specialize in pets, “ says Beller, who describes herself as a holistic phyto-therapist and who runs Well Scents, which provides all-natural, toxin-free essential oil and hydrosol-based products. “So it made sense to join forces in a shared space and put our energy and synergy into a physical space together.”

“We both put out our shingles (as businesswomen) nine years ago and we’ve collaborated ever since,” adds Herman, who has been doing this and related work for most of her life. “It just made sense to join forces. I love sharing the space with Cheryl! Our joined energies make even more healing and balancing possible!”

Herman’s goals are two-fold:

--To see animals (dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, goats, domestic rats… just about all mammals except humans, though humans benefit as a side effect) achieve as balanced a state of being as possible, whether emotional, spiritual, or physical well-being, and

--To optimize communication and understanding between species

She does this using a variety of modalities, including animal communications. She has been working with aromatherapy as a treatment since she started working with Beller, nine years ago, and, as a result, they have come up with a number of custom blends to suit the needs of her clients. These blends have generalized in usage to many animals with similar issues!

“More than 80% of Cheryl’s blends have been developed because of the needs of my clients, but the creating of the blends is 100% Cheryl’s doing,” says Herman. “Cheryl is an alchemist. I call her a miraculous alchemist! I tell her a pet’s issues and she comes up with a blend which addresses those issues exactly! Further, I know that what she creates is 200% safe for my clients to use, unlike many other blends on the market.”

Much of Herman’s work is done at a client’s home or by remote phone sessions, which frees up the office space for Beller to offer classes for people wishing to learn more about essential oils, and allowing them to create their own blends. Because she now has use of the very homey office space, Beller has added a weekly Aroma Bar to the menu of services, where, from noon to 4 p.m. on selected Saturdays, participants can have a simple custom blend created just for them on the spot, or they can consult with Beller to create a complex blend for physical, mental, or emotional challenges that they would like addressed, either for themselves, for another, or for the well-being of their special dog, cat, or horse.

The monthly Aroma Bar schedule and the class schedule can be found at cherylbeller.com. Classes and consultations are also available by appointment, so drop in by yourself or collect a few friends and try a brand new experience together.

As a pet therapist, Herman wants to be clear that she’s not a dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist. “I am a listener, communicator, and therapist. This means I can help you to understand your four-legged better,” she says on her website. “I listen to other species, who share all sorts of information with me. I use what they say, and what I sense/feel in their bodies, to give you more information, and to help devise a plan if there are issues in need of addressing. I will always leave you with more information than before we met, and with a clear plan of action going forward.” Herman works with many local trainers and veterinarians as well.

The plan of action she devises could, and often does, include aromatherapy treatments, many specially formulated to treat the client’s individual pet. Sharing an office space now makes the collaboration between therapist and aromatherapist that much more efficient and convenient.

“Every client’s needs are different, but probably, when it comes to behavioral issues, I almost always use Cheryl’s blends, “ says Herman. She has been using aromatherapy in her practice since she opened her office in downtown Carmel 9 years ago. The two met at about the same time through a mutual friend. “A light bulb went off and we said, “We have to do this together,” says Beller.

About Adrienne Herman
Adrienne has lived in Carmel for about 20 years, 10 of those as a dog therapist (she worked for a year out of her home before opening her office in Carmel, though she did this work for about 30-plus years before making it official). A third-generation Californian, she grew up in the East Bay area in Northern California.

She got her first dog at age 5 and spent about half of her life at her grandparents’ chicken ranch in Petaluma, where she not only interacted with chickens, but also goats, rabbits, cats, dogs and cattle.

She always had an interest in going into the “helping professions,” graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA and a master’s degree in educational psychology from California State University East Bay (formerly California State University Hayward).

Her career path began by teaching children with developmental disabilities and other special needs to swim when she was in high school and college, then, post grad work, being Director of Community Services at a psychiatric hospital in Oakland, and taking health kinesiology courses. That’s where she met a veterinarian who applied the knowledge from those classes to the dogs she was treating. For Herman, that’s when her interest in treating animals began in earnest.

After moving to Carmel, Adrienne served as special needs coordinator for Temple Beth Israel, working with children pre-K through 10th grade. She took a year off and worked with her mentor, energy healer Hilary Nicholls, before opening her office space in downtown Carmel.

Adrienne spends her time divided between Carmel and the San Francisco Bay Area where she also sees clients, and visits with her adult children and grandchildren.

About Cheryl Beller
After spending more than two decades in the medical care and medical management group fields, Cheryl began exploring alternative healing modalities in the 1990’s. She was especially impressed with the many levels of positive effects that people and their pets experienced when exposed to essential oils and hydrosols in various delivery systems.

Cheryl’s other career experience include management and administrative positions in accounting and payroll firms, and in school district budget and business services.

Cheryl has had a lifelong interest in health and wellness and a lifelong love of animals, particularly dogs, horses and cats.

As her interest developed into a passion, Cheryl enlisted the expertise and insights of various animal practitioners, eventually developing properly diluted, targeted essential oil or hydrosol-based products that address most of the emotional, psychological, and behavioral needs of dogs, horses, and cats, specifically.

She also discovered that additional issues could be addressed with custom blends that are specifically formulated so that they can safely be used on a daily basis. These blends offer natural solutions to everyday concerns and challenges.

In 2010, she founded Well Scents, Aromatherapy for Pets and Their People (wellscents.com), all-natural, toxin-free essential oils and hydrosols, products to help both people and animals maintain and create wellness.

In January 2019, Cheryl began offering hands-on blending classes at the office that she shares with pet therapist Adrienne Herman. The classes assist people in creating blends that are safe and correctly diluted for themselves, their families, friends, and pets.

Also, in January 2019, Cheryl opened an Aroma Bar in the Carmel office, where simple custom blends can be created right on the spot or where one can consult with Cheryl to create a more complex custom blend for specific physical, mental, and emotional challenges that need to be addressed.

Cheryl and her husband Craig live on the Monterey Peninsula of California with their dogs, Henry and Mikki.

Lewis Builders of Carmel, the Premier Design/Build and Aging-in-Place Specialists on the Monterey Peninsula, Wins Remodeling Award

Lewis Builders of Carmel has announced it has won an award at the 2018 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence.

Carmel, CA, June 27, 2018 — Lewis Builders of Carmel has announced it has won an award at the 2018 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence.

Lewis Builders won in the category Outdoor Living over $75,000, one of more than 90 remodeling companies from across the United States named winners. The entries were judged on overall design, the creative use of space and materials, and the degree to which the project enhanced the original structure.

The Chrysalis Awards program, begun in 1994, recognizes the nation’s best work in 15 general categories of residential and commercial remodeling. The Chrysalis Awards are open to any professional remodeler and design professional in the United States.

“We are honored to be recognized for the quality of our work and design from such a prestigious company,” said John Lewis, founder and owner of Lewis Builders.

“In 1977, a developer built this house on top of a hillside with 360-degree city and mountain views, without any regard to how to enjoy those views,” wrote Lewis about the award-winning remodel. “Thirty-nine years later, the home finally blossomed with this new outdoor living space.

“The interior floor plan was adjusted to take advantage of the best views; kitchen/dining rooms now open to the outdoors. The new outdoor living space is complete with kitchen, bar, kegerator, and diamond-shaped cement patio with firepit. Both sunrises and sunsets can be now be seen from the sitting areas on the wraparound deck.”

Winning entries will be featured in July’s issue of Qualified Remodeler magazine.

Pictures of the 2018 award-winning projects can be seen on Chrysalis website www.chrysalisawards.com and on www.porch.com beginning in late June. For more information about the Chrysalis Awards, contact Ken Kanline at 888-263-5687 or at info@chrysalisawards.com.

Judging
Chrysalis judges are editors and writers of consumer publications such as Better Homes & Gardens, Woman's Day's Home Remodeling & Makeovers, Southern Living Magazine and Sunset Magazine. What makes these projects so relevant to you is that these judges apply their training to select projects they want the public to see just as they would do in their publications.

Hofsas House Packages for 2018

Get Artsy Package
For decades, Carmel, California has been a haven for artists, from authors, poets and actors to painters and sculptors. Today there are more than 80 art galleries within walking distance from the hotel. The Hofsas House is part of that artistic tradition and has been touched by one of the world’s most famous artists. Did you know that artist Maxine Albro was commissioned by Donna Hofsas to paint the welcoming mural and the headboard featured in Room 47 of the Hofsas House? In the 1940s and 1950s, Maxine was living in Carmel and was friends with Donna. After the main four-story addition to the Hofsas House was completed in 1957, Donna asked Maxine to paint the mural and add other highlights to the front of the building to enhance the hotel's Bavarian theme. Maxine also painted the three pictures now hanging in the lobby.

The Hofsas House celebrates Carmel's artistic legacy by offering guests its special “Get Artsy Package.” This package includes a stay in the Room 47 — the very room Maxine Albro painted! Mention the Hofsas House “Get Artsy” package with the code “HHArt” and receive a gourmet cheese tray and bottle of wine upon arrival.

Carmel continues to be an artist colony and attracts some of the world’s most famous artists, including painters, sculptors, and photographers. Hofsas House can help arrange a tour of Carmel's art galleries and artists' studios with Carmel Art Tours. Discover secret passageways, visit hand-picked galleries, both the internationally acclaimed and the hidden gems. There's also an opportunity for a chance encounter with an artist at work in a Carmel studio. Cost is $25 per person, reservations are required, and participants meet for the tour at Carmel Visitors Center. Info at www.carmelarttours.com, 800-979-3370.
