Monterey County Fair is Back for 2021 on Sept. 3-6, at Monterey County Fair & Event Center

Monterey County Fair is back for 2021 with the theme, “Fair Fun in 2021!” on Sept. 3-6, after cancelling the 2020 event because of the pandemic.

Monterey, CA, July 07, 2021 — Monterey County Fair is back for 2021 with the theme, “Fair Fun in 2021!” on Sept. 3-6, after cancelling the 2020 event because of the pandemic.

The 85th annual Fair will be held at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road, but in a scaled-down version.

“We are excited to have the Monterey County Fair back in 2021, with all the things people expect from the Fair — food, entertainment, live music, exhibits and a carnival with rides and games — although in a scaled-down way for health and safety reasons,” said Fair CEO Kelly Violini. “We have a ‘limited footprint’ with all carnival rides on the main lawn, which allows for parking on-site. All ticket sales are in advance in an effort to be cashless. Tickets are $10 for adults/seniors and $5 for children ages 6-11. Children 5 and under are free.”

Violini said tickets will be on sale in advance until sold out. If tickets don’t sell out, a ticket kiosk will be set up so people can buy them on a walk-up basis on the day they attend the Fair.

While some details of the Fair are still being finalized, the live music lineup has been released:

>Left of Center — 7:30 p.m. Friday, September 3, at the Payton Stage

>Journey Revisted –  7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, at Payton Stage

>Money Band — 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, at Payton Stage

>Samz School of Rock — 2:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6 at Payton Stage

The annual Monterey County Fair Livestock Show, will now be held the weekend prior to the Fair, on Aug. 25-28, 2021.

More information about this year’s Fair will be posted on the official website at: www.montereycountyfair.com

Monterey County Fair Names New President, Vice President on Board of Directors

The Monterey County Fair has announced two officers to the Board of Directors of the 7th District Agricultural Association, Teri Short as President and Dan Presser as Vice President.

Monterey, CA, January 28, 2021 — The Monterey County Fair has announced two officers to the Board of Directors of the 7th District Agricultural Association, Teri Short as President and Dan Presser as Vice President.

Short, who was appointed by Gov. Jerry Brown to the Board of Directors in March 2017, is the first African-American woman to serve on the board. She previously served as Vice President. Presser is the owner of FourWinds Travel in Carmel and was appointed to the Fair Board by Gov. Brown in 2014.

Short has been a community advocate serving the cities of Monterey County for decades. Her involvement and leadership stems throughout numerous organizations advocating for social justice, income inequality, community organizing, and collaborating with stakeholders to find solutions to improve the lives of our families.

Her career has been in the non-profit, tax, and title industries. She has also spent time as a campaign consultant.

Short has shown a strong commitment to local schools. She served as President of North Salinas High School’s Site Council for 12 years and was a member of the LCAP Parent Advisory, SUHSD Facility Naming, and Curriculum Adoption Committees to name a few. She previously served as President of the Washington Middle School and Laurel Wood Elementary School Site Councils. Short also worked as a Community Educator for Monterey County POSTPONE (now CAPREP), a comprehensive teen sex education program. She continues to be available to work with our youth as a mentor.

Short is the current chair of the East Garrison Community Services District Advisory Committee. She has served in this capacity since she was appointed by former Monterey County Supervisor Jane Parker in 2018.

Short has previously served her community on the City of Salinas Traffic and Transportation Commission, President of the Salinas Valley Democratic Club, and as a Vice Chair on the Monterey County Democratic Central Committee.

Short was born and raised in Monterey County, is the mother of five children, and lives in East Garrison with her partner Michael.

Presser moved to the Monterey Peninsula from Texas in 1989. In Texas he helped in roundups, branding, and rodeoing.

His first broadcasting job on the West Coast was to be one of the KTOM Radio Salinas Rodeo announcers. “The first half of my life I was in advertising,” he says. “Monterey is not exactly the mecca of advertising, so I moved in another direction.”

Presser holds a commercial pilot’s license and that got him interested in the travel business, which led him to FourWinds Travel, a business he loves. The agency’s specialty is African safaris and adventure travel.

“The position is gratifying and at times overwhelming,” said Presser when first appointed to the board. “Kelly Violini, the Fair’s CEO, is fantastic and is the catalyst that really makes the fair one of the best in the country.”

Monterey County Fair Announces Dates, Theme and Poster for 2020 Fair Featuring Artwork by Renowned Artist Jo Mora

A mural by renowned California artist Jo Mora has been selected for the official poster of the 2020 Monterey County Fair and inspired its theme, “Fiesta.”

Monterey, CA, October 18, 2019 — A mural by renowned California artist Jo Mora has been selected for the official poster of the 2020 Monterey County Fair and inspired its theme, “Fiesta.”

The 84th Annual Monterey County Fair will be held from Thursday, Sept. 3-Monday, Sept. 7, 2020, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road in Monterey. The Fair is also celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the city of Monterey in 2020.

Trotter Galleries in Carmel acquired the complete Jo Mora “Fable” mural collection in 2015 and one of the murals was used as the official poster for the 80th anniversary of the Fair in 2016.

The famed seven-mural suite was originally commissioned in 1936, during the middle of the Great Depression, to enliven the walls of what would be named The Fable Restaurant, located in the former Drake-Wiltshire Hotel in San Francisco. Mora, a Monterey Peninsula artist who was known throughout California for his multi-talented and imaginative abilities of expression, was selected for this important commission.

“The artist’s gift as both a humorist and storyteller is brilliantly conveyed in these murals through colorful anthropomorphic imagery, captivating an audience of any age or background, and are still as relevant today as when he first created them in his local studio 84 years ago,” said Paula Trotter of Trotter Galleries.

Mora (1876-1947) was an artist-historian, sculptor, painter, photographer, illustrator, muralist and author who has been called the "Renaissance Man of the West." Born in Uruguay, Mora and his family moved to Carmel in 1921, where he created the monumental bronze and travertine sarcophagus and altar for Father Junípero Serra that was placed in the Carmel Mission Basilica. A prolific artist, Mora’s sculptures, illustrations, watercolors and etchings were frequently exhibited across the United States. Starting in 1937, Mora wrote and illustrated a number of children's books about the West.

“Somewhere Jo Mora must have been smiling when four years ago one of his Fable murals was selected to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Monterey County Fair,” said Trotter. “Once again, as Jo always intended, we are all smiling as another of his Fable murals was selected and specially titled ‘Fiesta’ for this year’s theme for the 2020 Monterey County Fair.”

Junior Livestock Auction Champions to be Honored at 2019 Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation Announces this Year’s Scholarship Recipient and Exhibitor of 2019 Heritage Hog

Area youth and their animals will be honored as champions after the Monterey County Fair Junior Livestock Auction, set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

Monterey, CA, August 11, 2019 — Area youth and their animals will be honored as champions after the Monterey County Fair Junior Livestock Auction, set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 31.

In addition, the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation announced that this year’s Scholarship recipient of $2,500 and exhibitor of the 2019 Heritage Hog is
Ivan Trujillo from Greenfield High School FFA. Trujillo was raised in the Salinas Valley and will be a senior this coming school year at Greenfield High.

“The heart and soul of the fair is the junior livestock program,” said Kelly Violini, CEO MCF. “Many of the exhibitors relay on their earnings from their projects to pay for their college educations. Supporting the junior livestock auction, not only supports the youth of our county, but is a tax-deductible donation.”

Check-in for buyers at the Junior Livestock Auction will begin at 8:00 a.m. in the Livestock Event Center with breakfast provided by Margarita Maniacs. Morning announcements and the dedication of the 2019 Auction will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the sale kicking off promptly at 9:00 a.m. There is no break for lunch this year, but the event will continue straight through, concluding with the sale of the Monterey County Fair Heritage Foundation Hog. At this point, all buyers are invited to enjoy a BBQ Reception in the Seaside Room with hosted bar. At the reception, the winner of the 2019 Top Buyer with highest gross and Top Buyer with number of lots purchased will be announced.

Trujillo dreams of becoming the “first generation” in his family to attend college after high school, and has a career goal of becoming an Agricultural Educator. He is hopeful that he will inspire others in his community to strive to fulfill their dreams, just as he has. If his name sounds familiar, he was the recipient of the 2019 Salinas Valley Fair’s Heritage Scholarship.

Trujillo has a variety of interests in FFA and has held several leadership roles in his local FFA Chapter, as well the Monterey Bay Section and local Region. He has attended both the State FFA and National FFA Leadership Conferences, where he was able to network with others and build his network of like-minded individuals. Trujillo recently earned his State Degree in FFA. One teacher described him as having a “wonderful sense of humor, strong work ethic, and has a positive influence on those around him.”

After high school, he plans to pursue a higher education at one of several colleges, focusing on Agriculture Education or Agri-Business, hoping to return to our area and become an Ag Teacher and FFA Advisor one day, to give back to his “amazing community.” He walks the walk by volunteering for various community events, as his busy schedule permits.

All proceeds from the sale of the Heritage Hog will benefit youth in the community by promoting scholarship opportunities, agricultural awareness, and help improve the barns, grounds, and event center venues at the Monterey County Fair.

For information or to support the Heritage Hog, contact the Heritage Foundation Team of Butch & Gary. Gary Robinson is at 831-809-1317 and Butch Lindley is at 831-596-9902.

Carnival Rides Run the Gamut from Fun to Scary at the 2019 Monterey County Fair, Aug. 29-Sept. 2

The Monterey County Fair’s popular Carnival returns this year with 30 rides for the 83rd Annual Fair, set for Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019.

Monterey, CA, August 01, 2019 — The Monterey County Fair’s popular Carnival returns this year with 30 rides for the 83rd Annual Fair, set for Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019.

Come ride on the safe and exciting rides from Helm and Sons Amusements. There is a stellar line-up of action-packed rides this year, which features 30 great rides to enjoy, from spectacular scream-inducing rides to fun rides and attractions for families and kids. With new carnival rides and improved games, the Fair is popular with families who want to bring their kids and grandkids out for a day of great family fun.

There is fun for all ages in the Carnival, with rides including the 70-foot tall Century Wheel and the unique red-white-and-blue Americana Wheel. Enjoy a slide on burlap sacks on the Alpine Slide — every kid loves slides, and the almost 100-foot-long Alpine Slide lets you and three of your friends slide down side-by-side at the same time!

Take a thrilling stroll through the House of the Dead, if you dare; or walk through the festive Mardi Gras, a two-story mirror maze with a spiral slide at the end. The little ones will enjoy The Cool Bears, which features four giant "cool" bears that they can spin and sit in.

The Xtreme Star Dancer is one of the most popular rides on the midway. Upon boarding, riders are secured with over-the-shoulder restraints, and as the claw begins to rotate, it starts to swing back and forth until it reaches its full height of 60 feet in the air! Combining a spinning and swinging motion, the Star Dancer provides riders with a completely unique riding experience.

For the little riders, there are wide selection of rides in Cub Country, a special kid-friendly zone with rides and amenities just their size. No scary monsters or screaming fast rides here! Just gentle fun for little ones and their families, including the Fantasy Carousel, Baja Buggies, Turtle Races, Flying Dragon, Krazy Planes and Gummi and Firedog Inflatables.

Some of the new rides this year include the ever-popular Gravitron, the classic Tilt-a-Whirl, the exciting Gold Miner, the max-intensity Insomniac, the spinning Tornado and the aptly named Sizzler. If the sizzling speed doesn't give you a clue, the added twirling of the cars certainly will!

Carnival wristbands are $35, $25 in advance, and $25 online. Wristbands are available every day this year and all military and law enforcement receive a $5 discount every day. This is a coupon that can be exchanged for free popcorn, 2 for 1, free prize and a carnival wristband.

Fun Pack tickets will be sold at Sand City and Salinas Costco stores from July 25- August 29 and include two admission tickets, two carnival coupons, and multiple food coupons for $49.99.

Carnival tickets and wristbands can be purchased online at www.montereycountyfair.com or at Salinas or Sand City Costco stores.

Ride Monterey-Salinas Transit free from any stop. Just show your online ticket or park for $12 at the Monterey Pines Golf Course Thursday-Saturday or $8 to park at Monterey Peninsula College, Saturday-Monday with a free shuttle to the Fair provided by MST.

Entertainment Lineup at 2019 Monterey County Fair Features Rising Country Star Mitchell Tenpenny, Tickets On Sale Online Now

Rising country music star Mitchell Tenpenny tops the entertainment lineup at the 2019 Monterey County Fair, Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, with advance tickets on sale online now.

Monterey, CA, June 25, 2019 — Rising country music star Mitchell Tenpenny tops the entertainment lineup at the 2019 Monterey County Fair, Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, with advance tickets on sale online now.

Country star Tenpenny, whose 2018 hit “Drunk Me” hit #2 on the U.S. country charts, will perform Thursday, Aug. 29 on the Garden Stage, and tops the list of country artists performing at the fair. Acts include a Carrie Underwood Tribute (Saturday, Aug. 31) and Garth Guy (Saturday, Aug. 31), a tribute to Garth Brooks. Journey Revisited (Friday, Aug. 30), a tribute to the great Bay Area band Journey, will also perform during the fair.

Tenpenny’s follow-up single, “Alcohol You Later,” released on Riser House/Columbia Nashville, also quickly climbed the country charts. Nashville resident Tenpenny released his debut album, “Black Crow,” in 2015, and his second album and full-length major label debut album “Telling All My Secrets” in 2018.

Established in 2011, Journey Revisited is an ensemble of top-tier professionals with the drive to deliver a faithful musical experience. Journey Revisited is dedicated to bringing the studio recordings of Journey to life on stage.

Two lead vocalists, Frank House and Kevin Jachetta, bring the classic Steve Perry- Gregg Rolie sound with their authentic re-creation of Journey’s distinctive vocals. Journey Revisited is on point in recreating that classic Journey sound, you won’t find a tighter sounding band around.

Dean Simmonds began his career as a Garth Brooks tribute artist in 1994. In 1996, producer John Stuart discovered and hired him to perform in the world famous “Legends in Concert” in Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Atlantic City, and several tours and one-night performances throughout the USA and Canada. Simmonds is still the only “Garth” on the Legends’ roster and still performs in many of the Legends shows.

Simmonds has also produced his own full-length show based on Garth’s live concerts. In 2014, Dean’s “Garth Guy” show was featured on the national television show, “World’s Greatest Tribute Bands” on Mark Cuban’s network, AXS TV.

The Carrie Underwood Tribute features country singer Kaylee Starr performing country superstar Underwood’s many hit songs.

All live music is free with fair admission. A full schedule of entertainment will be released this summer.

Theme of 2019 Monterey County Fair, ‘High Tides and Carnival Rides,’ and official poster unveiled

The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

Monterey, CA, November 18, 2018 — The Monterey County Fair announced that the theme for the Aug. 29-Sept. 2, 2019, fair will be “High Tides and Carnival Rides.”

The fair also unveiled its official poster for this year's event, featuring critters from the fair’s popular livestock displays and auctions, including a cow, horse, goat, rabbit, ewe, rooster and pig frolicking on the beach with a “woodie” station wagon and surfboards with the fair’s carnival rides in the background.

The poster was designed by artist Scott Westmoreland, who is well known for his surf, ocean, and woodie car-themed work. He also created official posters for the fair in 2009, with “Reel in the Fun,” in 2013 with “At the Heart of it All,” and in 2015, with “Farm Fresh Fun.”

Westmoreland began his career as an illustrator in the entertainment industry as an artist for major theatrical productions nationwide, including the Broadway stage. He has also worked with the Walt Disney Company and MCA Universal, later becoming a full-time staff artist at Disney. Westmoreland created numerous marketing, merchandising and collector edition pieces for Disney, as well as countless conceptual and developmental campaigns for Michael Eisner.

Westmoreland later rejoined the freelance world and is known as a "top 100" seller on Art.com. Westmoreland has been featured by television shows like Fox's "Trading Spouses," ABC Family's "Knock First," and in publications like "Decor" and "Total Art Licensing."

“We are thrilled about the 2019 Monterey County Fair theme, it ties in a lot of our favorite things, including the beach, surfing, livestock and carnival rides,” says Kelly Violini, Monterey County Fair CEO. “We hope that everyone can come out and join us for next year’s fair.”

Westmoreland’s Monterey County Fair art will be featured through the course of the 2019 Fair as the Fairs’ graphic identity. His Monterey County Fair art will be seen as the 2019 poster and shown in all of the merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts and souvenirs.

The Monterey County Fair will run from Thursday, Aug. 29-Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at the Monterey County Fair & Event Center, 2004 Fairground Road, in Monterey.
