Everyone’s Harvest sees dramatic increase in funds distributed through nonprofit’s Market Match program

Strengthening its mission to provide equitable access to healthy, affordable fruits and vegetables, Everyone’s Harvest saw a 28-percent increase in funds distributed through its Market Match program in 2020.

Marina, CA, February 10, 2021 - Strengthening its mission to provide equitable access to healthy, affordable fruits and vegetables, Everyone’s Harvest saw a 28-percent increase in funds distributed through its Market Match program in 2020.

“We were thrilled to see that more families than ever took advantage of this program in 2020, and we are also able to double produce purchases for families who received the Pandemic (P-EBT) CalFresh allocation,” said executive director Reid Norris.

Market Match is California’s healthy food incentive program that matches customers’ federal nutrition assistance benefits (like CalFresh and WIC) at farmers’ markets. The program empowers low-income customers to make healthy food choices and benefits hundreds of small and midsize California farmers.

In the last 10 years, Everyone’s Harvest has coordinated more than $175,000 in CalFresh purchases for fresh fruits and vegetables. September 2020 was the best month in the history of the Market Match program, as more families than ever now rely on farmers’ markets for healthy, local produce.

“Not only have we had our most successful year in distributed funds, we've also had great success in assisting those with EBT for the first time,” said Norris, who reported a 57 percent increase in first-time users. “With this increase, we are delighted to ensure food security for those who need it most.”

Max’s Helping Paws Foundation earns $5,000 grant from Monterey Peninsula Foundation

Max’s Helping Paws Foundation received a financial boost last week through a $5,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation

Monterey, CA, June 04, 2020 - Max’s Helping Paws Foundation received a financial boost last week through a $5,000 grant from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation, host of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and PURE Insurance Championship.

The financial gift will go a long way toward furthering Max’s mission of helping local families fund treatment for pets in crisis.

What began in 2016 as a way for Dyana Klein to honor the memory of her beloved dog Maximillian has grown into a critical source of funding for local families, especially during the current pandemic. In March the foundation reached an important milestone, helping more than 250 Monterey County pet owners by providing more than $220,000 in total assistance.

Through it all, the foundation has given Klein a way to help lessen the guilt and heartbreak of other pet owners who might have to allow their pets to suffer, or may need to euthanize or surrender them because of financial circumstances.

The donation is part of Monterey Peninsula Foundation’s ongoing mission to enhance the quality of life in Monterey County and surrounding areas through the strategic disbursement of charitable funds generated by hosting two golf tournaments, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the PURE Insurance Championship.

With close to 80 years of expertise in managing golf events and charitable giving, Monterey Peninsula Foundation focuses on creating positive community change across Monterey, Santa Cruz, and San Benito counties. Find out more about the foundation at www.montereypeninsulafoundation.org.

Goodwill Central Coast’s e-Commerce Team Back in Action and Shipping New Items Daily While Feeding Into Nonprofit’s Mission Of Creating Jobs

Once again, there’s a buzz of activity on the top floor of the Goodwill Central Coast headquarters on Moffett Street in Salinas as Goodwill’s ecommerce team opens up operations again, listing and shipping new items daily.

Salinas, CA, May 22, 2020 — Once again, there’s a buzz of activity on the top floor of the Goodwill Central Coast headquarters on Moffett Street in Salinas as Goodwill’s ecommerce team opens up operations again, listing and shipping new items daily.

Monterey County officials gave Goodwill formal permission to open again on April 30, and, on May 4, the operation began with a manager, assistant manager and four department heads. Three days later, 12 other full-time associates who had been furloughed were recalled.

“We are working on new enhancements in our ecommerce operations daily and expect a larger and more convenient process for our customers soon,” said Alan C. Martinson, Goodwill Central Coast vice president of retail.

The e-commerce team sorts through the most coveted donated items to put up for sale at shopgoodwill.com. The website, which opened in July 2017, represents the first e-commerce auction platform created, owned and operated by a nonprofit. Goodwill designed the virtual marketplace to provide an engaging online shopping destination that would further the Goodwill mission.

“It fits our mission, reinvesting in jobs,” said Martinson. “It’s effectively a job creator within a job creator.”

Shoppers enjoy what Goodwill calls “guilt-free retail therapy,” knowing every purchase supports job training programs and promotes reuse, keeping items out of landfills and reducing the need for scarce natural resources.

Martinson hand-picked the team, store associates with experience and a sharp eye who could cull specialty items from the tons of donations, separate them, tag them, photograph them, process them, upload them, and ship them — all in one facility.

The Salinas team shipped 400 to 500 items each day, from gold jewelry to clothing, musical instruments and more, before the pandemic forced operations to close. At its height, jewelry and books were the biggest sellers on the site.

Max’s Helping Paws Foundation Fact Sheet:

MHPF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that partners with Monterey County veterinary practices to provide financial assistance to clients with pets in need of critical, short-term care or longer-term, continued care.

Pets are members of the family. MHPF keeps pets at home with their families and out of overburdened shelters.

MHPF’s minimizes economic euthanasia, surrender, and suffering of severely ill or injured pets due to their owners’ inability to afford necessary and unexpected medical treatments.

Since it first started providing financial assistance in mid-2017, MHPF has approved more than $160,000 (and growing) in financial assistance and has helped nearly 200 pet families deal with financial hardship.

MHFP is a matching program paying up to 50% of costs, including diagnostic tests (Up to the Maximum allowable), allowing owners to make informed decisions around the fate of their companion pet. We help owners educate themselves as to all their options. We are unique in this aspect. We also provide guidance to help pet owners gather their portion.

MHPF has 23 veterinary partners.

MHFP is based in Monterey County and serves only Monterey County.

We are very responsive to our pet families and our veterinary partners. We have a veterinary liaison, Shelley, so our veterinary partners have a person to go to keep lines of communication open.

We have a no-contract relationship with our veterinary partners, making for a very organic and personal connection. We have an enrollment form that outlines what we provide.

MHPF launched an unprecedented two-year pilot program that provides for pets with chronic conditions, the Continued Care Program, which will provide up to two years of ongoing financial support to responsible families whose dog or cat faces a chronic illness.

MHPF is the first animal welfare organization in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties to launch a Continued Care program such as this in Monterey County.

Max’s Helping Paws Foundation is named after Dyana and Jonathan’s beloved miniature pinscher, Maximillian, who they lost to illness in May of 2016.
