Donated Paintings of Carmel Beach Pups Capture Hearts of Pet Owners, Help Pets in Need

When Ed Davis picked up the illustrations of his beloved dogs, Bichons Bert and Ernie, from Max’s Helping Paws Foundation office, he got a little emotional, shedding a few tears in the process.

Carmel, CA, December 09, 2020 — When Ed Davis picked up the illustrations of his beloved dogs, Bichons Bert and Ernie, from Max’s Helping Paws Foundation office, he got a little emotional, shedding a few tears in the process. Bert had passed away just a year and a half ago and Ernie’s gimpy knees prevented him from going on their favorite weekend walks on Carmel Beach.

Davis, a resident of Hollister who works at Hayward Lumber in Monterey, had been going to Carmel Beach to walk Bert and Ernie for the past 10 years and became part of the informal Carmel Beach dog community, along with artist Bonnie Folster and her beloved Scottish deerhound Buck.

Seven years ago Folster started painting and illustrating the dogs she and Buck befriended on Carmel Beach, including Bert and Ernie, and by this year she had accumulated more than 100 works of art.

When she decided to move out of the area, she wanted to donate the artworks to a good cause, which prompted her to put nearly all the works into the public eye, hopefully to be "claimed by" and given to as many of the families of the dogs she painted as possible, as part of a fundraiser for Max’s Helping Paws Foundation and its important mission to provide financial assistance to pets in need.

Folster’s 100 dogs paintings and illustrations (some are acrylic on canvas, others are colored pencil on archival paper) went on display in July and pet owners could “claim” artworks of their pets and, if desired, donate to Max’s Helping Paws. A website was created (https://www.maxshelpingpaws.org/carmel-dogs ) so dog owners could browse the online gallery and see if their four-legged companions were immortalized by Folster.

Davis heard about the gallery and thought, “I wonder if I’ll recognize any of these dogs?” After a few minutes of browsing online, he hit paydirt.

“That’s Ernie! I gotta get this,” he said after spotting a colored pencil drawing of his precious pet. “I got so excited to find Ernie, I stopped looking. Then I wondered if I could find Bert.”

After more browsing, there he was, wearing Ernie’s red Hawaiian shirt (Bert actually favored a blue Hawaiian shirt), but there was no doubt it was Bert. So Davis ordered both pieces of art and went to pick them up at the gallery in Carmel.

“It was wonderful, and very emotional, but they understood,” said Davis, who met with Dyana Klein, co-founder of Max’s, to pick up the art. “I was more than happy to make a donation, but just getting paintings of my guys was even better.”

Although he doesn’t go to Carmel Beach now because of Ernie’s condition and pandemic restrictions, Davis looks fondly on the days Bert and Ernie frolicked on the beach with their four-legged pals.

“It was a bunch of great dogs and a great group of people down there. It’s a wonderful place,” he said about the Carmel Beach dog community. “I hope other owners will be able to find their dogs too.”

One couple who did find their dog, cairn terrier Barley’s painting, was Carmel’s Terry and David Clemens.

“My husband, David, and I met Bonnie and Buck five-plus years ago on Carmel Beach.  On our morning walks the two dogs, both Scots, yet very different in size, age, and temperament, became best friends,” said Terry Clemens. “One of Bonnie’s first dog paintings was of our exuberant young Barley. Years later she did another painting of our high-spirited but more mature cairn. We treasure both paintings, and our friendship with Bonnie. Buck will always be loved in our memories. We’re so happy Bonnie’s wonderful work is benefiting dogs and their owners who need help.”

There are about 70 pieces of artwork still unclaimed out of the 100 first displayed on the website gallery. Similar commissioned paintings by Folster, of varying sizes would normally “fetch” between $100 for the small paintings and pencil sketches, and more than $350 for the larger 8x12 paintings. Dog owners can browse the collection at the website at: www.maxshelpingpaws.org/carmel-dogs.

No payment is being requested, however, Folster asks that recipients of her artwork consider making a donation in whatever amount they feel is appropriate to Max’s Helping Paws Foundation’s MC Gives! page at: https://www.montereycountygives.com/nonprofit/animal-relief-fund-monterey/.

“These are a wonderful, personal and very unique opportunity to claim art pieces that capture pups when they are in their most authentic, playful and carefree state — having the most fun,” said Klein. “Bonnie's paintings capture the expressions, the essence of these pups at play on Carmel Beach. These were created over multiple years, so it's also a chance for those whose pets have passed to have something so personal, special and meaningful. Capturing joy is pretty important right now.”

As for Folster, she’s pleased that her artwork is going to a good cause and good homes.

“I didn’t do it to sell, I did it for fun,” Folster said when the fundraiser launched in July. “And it just kind of kept going. No one asked me to paint their dog, but lots of people might be surprised and, I hope, pleased, that I did. I hope they will make a generous donation to Max’s for all they are doing in this community. It’s very gratifying to have the paintings find a home with the people who love their dogs. And I had fun doing them.”

Determined to help Pet owners pay for Veterinary care, Dina Ruiz joins Max’s Helping Paws Foundation board

Facing unprecedented hardships brought by the pandemic, many Monterey County pet owners find it difficult, if not impossible, to afford the costs of unexpected care for their treasured pets.

Carmel, CA, November 11, 2020 - Now they have a new champion in Dina Ruiz, the newest board member for Max’s Helping Paws Foundation, a local animal welfare nonprofit that helps responsible pet owners fund treatment for pets facing a health crisis. “Helping responsible pet owners obtain vet services in times of need is one of the greatest undertakings in the nonprofit arena,” said Ruiz, who is “mom” to four dogs and one stray cat, who adopted her family in 2019. “Being part of Max’s Helping Paws, getting to be part of taking away stress and maintaining love, is an honor, a privilege.”

Ruiz has enjoyed a long and varied career in broadcast and print media. She is the former weeknight anchor at KSBW-TV in Salinas. She co-hosted the pioneering television show, “Candid Camera” with Peter Funt. She also created, executive produced and starred in E! Network’s “Mrs. Eastwood & Company” while managing the pop-vocal band Overtone featured in the show.

Ruiz has a 30-year history of service as president and/or member of nonprofit boards, including The California Museum, The Panetta Institute for Public Policy, Make-A-Wish Foundation of the Greater Bay Area, and now Max’s Helping Paws.

“I came late to the wonderful world of dog ownership, getting my first dog (a pug named Coco) when I was 48-years-old,” she said. “Since then, I’ve adopted and/or fostered nine dogs. I cannot imagine the agony of watching their health falter — or losing them altogether — due to not being able to take care of their medical needs. I am so grateful to Max’s Helping Paws for making vet care accessible to so many Monterey County citizens.”

Ruiz recognizes pet owners face urgent needs during the pandemic.

“Times are tougher than ever with Covid, virus-related job losses and other hardships,” she said. “Max’s Helping Paws is the light at the end of a dark tunnel for pet owners in their darkest hour. I am honored to be part of it!”

Believing financial circumstances should never decide a companion pet’s fate, Max’s relies on the generosity of the community to fund its mission. General donations are accepted through the nonprofit’s website www.maxshelpingpaws.org.

Max’s Helping Paws Eases Healing For Grieving Pet Owners Through "Rainbow Bridge Tribute Fund”

The passing of a beloved pet can leave us broken and disconsolate.

Carmel, CA, June 25, 2020 - The passing of a beloved pet can leave us broken and disconsolate. Tribute donations are a wonderful way to give in memory of others. Now, there is a unique way to help us heal, honor their memory while helping other pets in a health crisis. Rainbow Bridge Tribute Funds provide pet owners with your own virtual memorial that tells the story of your pet and shares that special relationship with friends and family who might wish to donate in your pet's memory. Most importantly, as the fund is distributed, each page will also share information about those helped in that pet's honor.

With an ongoing mission to help fund treatment for pets in crisis, the nonprofit Max’s Helping Paws Foundation (www.maxshelpingpaws.org) has created a convenient online form for pet owners to provide details so they can personalize their page with pet photos, stories and tributes, and easily be shared on social media. This private memorial fund requires a pledge of $1,000, however a $500 donation begins the set up process for your fund and page. This page can then be shared with others in an effort to reach the pledged amount.

The idea behind Rainbow Bridge came from a supporter of Max’s Helping Paws, Brittney Weinerth, who had lost her companion dog Abagail. Inspired by Max’s “Chestnut Fund” — to help pet owners experiencing severe and immediate personal financial loss resulting from the COVID-19 crisis — Brittney explained to Max’s founder, Dyana Klein, that it would be nice to have an “Abagail Fund” and invite her loved ones to donate to it, as during her grieving process, she struggled to find ways to relieve the pain and honor her bond with Abagail. “It would be really neat to see how the Abagail funds were used to make an impact for other animals,” she said. Klein obliged, and now Max’s is proud and pleased to offer the ability to set up a private Rainbow Bridge Fund in addition to its current Tribute Donation option.

Max's Helping Paws Expands Access to Financial Assistance to Better Meet Needs of Pet Owners

During these extraordinary times, Max’s Helping Paws Foundation has continued its mission to help fund treatment for pets in crisis, saying yes to nearly 250 pets through 23 veterinary partner practices.

Carmel, CA, May 15, 2020 - Historically, treatment had to be through one of these partner practices. Increased needs surrounding the COVID-19 , pandemic has led the nonprofit to announce that effective Friday, May 15, 2020, pet owners will be able to apply indefinitely for Max's financial assistance programs through any Monterey County veterinary practice that would like to sponsor a client.

“Organizations, both for-profit and nonprofit, must pivot to the needs of this county as best they can right now,” said Dyana Klein, who founded Max’s Helping Paws in 2016, following the death of her Miniature Pinscher Max. “Our first initiative was the launch of Chestnut's Crisis Fund, specifically designed to help pet owners financially impacted by the pandemic.”

Knowing that the ripple effects from the pandemic will be felt for a long time, the nonprofit needed to evolve to an open model based on “inclusivity, accessibility and reciprocity.”

“We know that the need for financial assistance to help keep companion pets from suffering has multiplied,” said Klein. “We have to be where the needs are, and we can't achieve that if we restrict support to a subset of local practices.”

With this new model, pet families, already in difficult situations, will not be asked to go somewhere new in order to apply for support. Eligibility and process, consisting of a client application and treating veterinary practice form, will remain unchanged. No enrollment form or contract of any kind will be required in order for a treating veterinary practice to sponsor a client.

Max’s will also unveil a simple virtual training page for new veterinary practices. “We hope to build a reciprocal support model so we can continue to help more pets at more practices,” Klein said. Max’s will highlight and feature year-round those practices that are able to reciprocate through participation in fundraising activities.

Believing financial circumstances should never decide a companion pet’s fate, Max’s relies on the generosity of the community to fund its mission. General donations are accepted through the nonprofit’s website www.maxshelpingpaws.org.

MHFP is a matching program paying up to 50% of costs, including diagnostic tests (Up to the Maximum allowable), allowing owners to make informed decisions around the fate of their companion pet. MHPF has 23 veterinary partners.

MHFP is based in Monterey County and serves only Monterey County.

We are very responsive to our pet families and our veterinary partners. We have a veterinary liaison, Shelley, so our veterinary partners have a person to go to keep lines of communication open.

We have a no-contract relationship with our veterinary partners, making for a very organic and personal connection. We have an enrollment form that outlines what we provide.

MHPF launched an unprecedented two-year pilot program that provides for pets with chronic conditions, the Continued Care Program, which will provide up to two years of ongoing financial support to responsible families whose dog or cat faces a chronic illness.

MHPF is the first animal welfare organization in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties to launch a Continued Care program such as this in Monterey County.
